Innovative Contributions of Citizens
This panel represents the Vision, Innovation, and Engagement of citizens whose contributions had deeply meaningful impact locally and beyond.
• In 1967, as a result of forward-thinking activists and city officials, the first bike lanes were established in the city. Davis was the very first city in the nation to have bike lanes on city streets, which included not only city planning, but changes to the vehicle code to design and codify standards that were eventually adopted in California and across the United States.
• Established in 1976, The award-winning Davis Farmers’ Market is the result of the vision and years-long work of determined farmers, activists, students, professors, and city officials. The work included recruiting local farmers and lobbying the Department of Food and Agriculture to change regulations to create the nation’s first certified farmers’ markets where farmers could sell directly to consumers.
• Village Homes is famous world-wide as an innovative and sustainable housing development, and the pioneering developments in solar design and energy efficiency standards that originated in Davis spread to the state and the nation.
• The artwork of Wayne Thiebaud represents the far-reaching influence of Davis artists and the UC Davis Art Department.
